Contrasting Osprey Slings: How We Choose Between the Daylite, Aeode, Archeon, Nebula, and Transporter

Osprey offers a handful of sling models that look pretty similar at first glance.

They’re not.

In volume capacity, they range all the way from 5 liters (the Daylite) to 13 liters (the Transporter), which allows you to take, respectively, what you’d have in a hip bag versus nearly a small backpack.

There are a wide variety of styles and features to be aware of as well.

We’ll break them down side-by-side in the table below and then offer some more commentary on which we’d choose for what purposes.

My take: After all this comparing I have chosen to buy and keep the Nebula I’m wearing in the photo above for daily use about town—you’ll see why later on.

Osprey Slings: Quick Comparison and Specs

The Similarities in All Osprey Slings

The various models of Slings do share a certain Osprey aesthetic and some basic characteristics, both positive and negative.

Pros:

• As with Osprey’s famous packs, these slings are well-built and use the same very high quality materials and zippers as found on various Osprey trekking packs. This might seem like overkill since they are not going to carry heavy loads, but it also means that they can stand up to rough daily use. You can expect them to last for quite some time.
• Osprey provides a lifetime guarantee and has long been known to support its products if anything should give out, especially due to manufacturer error.
• All of these slings are resistant-enough to water that you’ll be fine if caught in a brief downpour; you’ll be soaked through well before your sling’s contents are. (The more extremely water-resistant slings are the Archeon, Aeode, and Transporter.)
• Like most Osprey bags, these slings all have internal organization pockets and key clips (a hanging clip on the inside where you can keep and easily find keys—a definite time-saver). All except the Daylite sling have padded sleeves for tablets (or laptops) and a dedicated spot for phones.
• All Osprey slings can be adjusted to be worn over either shoulder. It’s good to be able to change this up from time to time, in my opinion.
• A major advantage of these and most slings as compared to backpacks is that they can be carried on your back over one shoulder but quickly whipped around to the front of your body without taking them off, for example if you need to retrieve an item or keep your stuff protected in a crowded space, such as in transport.

Cons:

• Osprey slings are a bit pricey, often in the same price range as their Daylite backpacks at between $50 to $100 in the U.S. You’re definitely getting both high quality and complex features, and you’re definitely paying for them. It’s possible to find much cheaper slings made with somewhat lower quality materials, which may not last as long but are fine if you don’t expect to use a sling regularly over a long time. Osprey’s pricing is in line with slings from other top reputable brands, at least.
• The larger slings are perhaps bigger than some users expect; check the specs carefully in the table above (clicking on the + icon) to make sure you’re getting the size that you want.

The Key Differences Between Osprey Sling Models, Explained

Osprey Daylite Sling 5L: For Day-to-Day Carry of Basic Items

The most pared-down and affordable of these is the Osprey Daylite Sling. It’s a great way to keep a phone and other basics on hand if you prefer not to stuff your pockets or wear a hip bag.

The Daylite Sling is more convenient than a deep handbag for carrying lots of small essentials, because its main compartment opens out completely with dual U-shaped zippers. These zippers also mean that if you are wearing the sling on your back but want to get at something, you can slide the sling around to your front and open the sling from the side, which will then be facing up at you.

The secondary front panel pocket is a good place for a phone and other small items to be organized.

There is also a mesh pocket on the front strap, where you can keep a card that you need to swipe frequently, chapstick, or other small items. It’s too small for a phone, but the front panel pocket is in any case a great place to keep a phone on hand.

There is no dedicated water bottle pocket in the Daylite Sling, but one can certainly use the main compartment for this purpose and then put other odds and ends in the separate front panel pocket.

There are a lot of wild two-toned color options for the Daylite Sling (as with the rest of the Daylite series)—much more so than the other slings here. It’s also available in simple black, tan, or yellow.

If the Daylite sling is playful, the Osprey Aoede Sling is svelte and serious. Osprey’s Aoede series of bags is designed to have a streamlined, minimalist look and this sling matches it. It’s available in a deep dark green or black and built with the same ultra-tough, abrasion resistant 840D ballistic polyester as the Archeon Sling (below).

The chief advantage of the Aoede Sling over the Archeon is that it allows you to carry a phone in its zippered pocket on the strap. Both the Aeode and much larger Nebula/Transporter slings have this feature; the Aoede is arguably slightly better for this purpose as it works with a zippered opening, rather than the (too-tight) mesh pocket of the Nebula. The Aeode phone pocket is plenty large enough for a big phone, including one in a case.

The padded tablet sleeve is just right for an 8″ device or less, such as a Kindle or an iPad Mini. Or: Some wild folks still even read books!

For many tastes, this 6.5 liter size is just right for the truly light feeling of a sling. This is enough space for a windbreaker, a snack, and other odds and ends without being too bulky. (I’ll admit then when wearing the 11-liter Nebula I feel a bit like I’ve got a small backpack on.) While I went with the Nebula, I get the feeling that most people reading this article will probable be best off with the Aoede.

Osprey Archeon Sling 7L: Extreme Abrasion Resistance, Large-Tablet-Ready, Compatible with the Techy Archeon Series

The Osprey Archeon Sling 7L is quite a bit like the Aeode Sling just above and they are both made of the same extremely tough and lightweight material. There are two main advantages of the Archeon over the Aeode:

• The Archeon Sling attaches into various other Osprey Archeon series bags in various ways.
• The Archeon is slightly larger and can carry a larger tablet (or small laptop). It is longer and not quite as deep, making it a very flat, tech-focused sling.

The main disadvantage of the Archeon is having no phone pocket on the front strap.

The Nebula Sling is a bit larger than most slings and so is a good option if you need to carry a small-backpack’s amount of stuff but you’d prefer a single, cross-body strap. The reason you want want that is that you can quickly rotate the sling around under your arm, and as with the other Osprey slings here, the main compartment zips open on three sides in a U shape enabling you to get at everything without taking it off.

The Nebula Sling actually zips open completely if you want so that you can also lay it out flat and get at everything.

There is a mesh phone pocket on the shoulder harness strap; I find it a tight fit for my Google Pixel in its case, but it works fine if I use both hands to get it in. There is also a stabilizing strap under the other arm, which I don’t use but could conceivably be useful when biking or running.

The mesh pocket on the back panel works great for carrying a water bottle and/or an umbrella.

Osprey Transporter Sling 13L: The Largest and Most Weather-Resistant

The Osprey Transporter Sling is the most weather resistant of the slings on this page, though any of them do hold up fine if you happen to get caught in the rain.

So it’s arguably overkill, but this sling, like everything in Osprey’s Transporter series, is built with an extremely water-resistant fabric (high-tenacity nylon, coated with carbonate); I was once caught in a heavy Peruvian rainstorm with the Transporter Boarding Bag and the bag’s contents survived fine while I was soaked through.

The Transporter Sling is, like the Nebula, the size of a small backpack; compared to the Nebula it is slightly wider and deeper and so can hold 2 liters more gear.

Like the Aeode, the Transporter Sling has a zippered pocket on the harness that holds a large phone.

There are attachment points on the outside of this sling, a unique feature that allows you to attach other gear or perhaps a bungee and put a raincoat on the back.

This is not a sling but rather an over-the-shoulder bag (so it doesn’t hug your body as closely and is generally worn at the side). But I think the Osprey Daylite Messenger 12L is worth mentioning here anyway because it’s actually of a similar size to the two slings above and has similar features in a slightly different format.

You can carry a water bottle, a laptop, and other basic items; it is padded on the side facing your body. I think it has quite thoughtful organization for an urban daily-use bag.

Meeting Specific Sling Needs

Below are our top Osprey Sling picks for various use cases.

The Most Minimalist Sling, for Just Carrying Essentials (No Laptop or Tablet)

We’d opt for the Daylite Sling above if you don’t need to carry tech gear or a larger amount of stuff, as it is a more typical sling size at 5L.

The Most Professional / Chic Slings

All of the Osprey slings come in various color options; even the Daylite series can be purchased in simple black.

That said, the sharpest-looking slings that would not be at all out-of-place in serious settings are the Aeode and the Archeon—at least in my opinion. Their design is subdued and minimalist, and they don’t have a lot of extra exterior flaps and features.

Carrying a Water Bottle in Your Sling

The Osprey Nebula Sling is certainly the best way to carry a water bottle in a sling.

That said, you could put a water bottle in the main compartment of any of the other slings, as long as you are completely sure that it doesn’t leak.

Carrying a Laptop (or Even a Portable Work Setup to a Co-Working Space)

You can fit a large laptop in either the Nebula or the Transporter Slings.

I have even used the Nebula to carry an entire portable dual-screen setup.

The Best Slings for Rainy Climates

Any Osprey sling will be fine in the rain, but if you live in a particularly rainy area and need a large sling, consider the Transporter. No sling is going to be completely waterproof (that is, capable of being submerged completely under a meter of water for an extended period), but the Transporter Sling is about as close as you can get. It keeps delicate electronics and other stuff well-protected in very wet and dirty environments.

For Walking Dogs

To keep basics on hand for simple dog walks or errands around the neighborhood, you probably don’t need to carry more than the 5L offered by the Daylite Sling. But if you do have more to carry or want a dedicated water bottle sleeve, consider the Daylite Messenger.

The Most Affordable Osprey Sling

At last check, the Daylite was the most affordable of the various Osprey Slings.

I picked the Nebula for myself, mainly because I want to carry a water bottle and sometimes a laptop.
