We’ve reviewed the few good over-the-shoulder slings that hold a water bottle. The largest, and the most suitable one for carrying a laptop is the Osprey Nebula Sling.
It also makes a great minimalist daypack for taking on the road. I have, for example, slipped it into the outer pocket of my Osprey Transporter Wheeled Carry-On while traveling and then taken it out to use as a daypack—most recently to keep essentials on hand while out exploring Mexico City. Compared to other Osprey daypacks, it’s slimmer and of course, as a sling, just goes over one shoulder, but has similar features.
I also use the Nebula Sling for day-to-day home life when carrying water and shoes to go dance forró or taking a laptop or book to go to a café. It’s a great way to have a larger amount of essentials on hand than what you’d get with most slings.
A Durable, Lightweight Sling with Sleeves for a Water Bottle and Laptop: The Osprey Nebula Sling
Not many slings allow you to carry a laptop and a water bottle. The Osprey Nebula Sling does.
What I like:
- An outer sleeve wide enough for both a water bottle and an umbrella together
- A laptop sleeve ample enough for my 15″ Macbook
- A unique sleeve on the front strap for super-easy access to a phone or payment cards
- Superbly durable, lightweight construction; lifetime warranty
What I dislike:
- Wider than most slings; while it’s light and comfortable, if you don’t need to carry a laptop or water bottle I’d recommend the narrower-but-otherwise-similar Osprey Daylite Sling instead.
- At last check, the Nebula Sling is a bit pricey, though at least it’s built-to-last and has Osprey’s lifetime guarantee
More About the Features and Construction of the Osprey Nebula Sling: What to Know Before Buying
Here’s a run-down of what I liked about the Osprey Nebula Sling, how to make the most of it, and a few issues I discovered and their potential solutions.
Overall Carry Volume and Appearance: Big for a Sling
The Osprey Nebula Sling is a bit bigger than your average sling; with an 11L volume you can actually carry quite a bit, if you choose to. Here’s how it looks fully packed.
That’s more than enough space for everything I need throughout a day spent visiting sites in a new city, which makes it comparable to a small backpack, just in one-strap sling form.
If you have a light day, it hugs close to the body and doesn’t appear bulky.
The Organization Pockets
The Osprey Nebula’s main pocket zips open completely on the top and sides. This makes it easy to get at all of the contents from any angle.
This is handy especially when you are wearing the sling on your back and need to get at a single item in the main compartment; you can just swing it around to the front under your arm and unzip the side of the bag that’s now on top.
The main compartment’s laptop sleeve is padded and roomy, with a bit of a false bottom to help protect your laptop should you set the bag down hard on the floor.
I can comfortably carry a whole nomadic work setup in this laptop sleeve: a 15-inch laptop, a second screen, slim keyboard, and a tablet, with the mouse and cables in the main compartment.
The main compartment is a good spot for a light change of clothes. I use it to take an extra T-shirt and shoes for Brazilian dancing protected in their own shoe sack, one I got with a cheap-but-great packing cube set.
There is an internal zippered pocket. This would be a good spot to protect anything of value from pickpockets; you might use it for a passport while traveling, for example.
The front strap has a sleeve for a phone; here it is with my Pixel phone, which is in a protective case that also has payment cards, making it a bit bulky. The phone fits but its quite snug and I wish the Nebula sling had been made with this pocket (and therefore the strap) just a bit larger to better accomodate large phones in cases. That said it works well; you pull on the tab with one hand and remove the phone with the other.
The secondary compartment on the front panel is where I keep odds and ends organized for quick access.
Here you’ll find small mesh organization pockets where you might keep lip balm, pens, headphones, earplugs, etc. The front panel pocket is deep but thin, it goes all the way down to the bottom of the bag. As with almost all Opsrey bags, there is a red key fob which makes it quite easy to find your keys.
The outer sleeve is one of my favorite things about this sling. It’s rare to find a sling with a water bottle sleeve; the Osprey Nebula Sling can securely hold any sized water bottle in its stretchy mesh sleeve. You can also easily fit an unbrella or protein shake or any similarly sized item.
There is also an attachment point for a blinker light on the front near the bottom.
The Carry Straps
The carry straps are fully adjustable so you can wear the Osprey Nebula Sling over the right or left side, as you prefer. You can also change it up from time to time—my preference—to avoid getting your body’s movements stuck in a rut.
Durability of the Construction and Guarantee
Everything about the Osprey Nebula Sling suggests that it is just as well-built as we typically see with Osprey packs. The material is a type of high-tenacity nylon; it’s both lightweight and quite durable. This is one reason it’s not as cheap as your typical polyester slings and packs, but it will last for much longer.
The nylon is treated with a PFA-free water repellant (and you don’t want PFAs in your frequent-carry items). I was in light rain a few times and the bag contents stayed dry.
Of particular note is the mesh used in the outer water bottle sleeve; it appears quite strong and durable, and not at all like the cheaper mesh pockets that so frequently fail on other slings.
The zippers have pull loops and seem quite sturdy; zippers are another common failure point but I’ve never had a zipper fail on any of the Osprey bags I’ve owned (and I’ve used them for decades now).
Recommendation: Get it with a HeroClip
If you’re thinking of getting the Osprey Nebula Sling or any similar daily use pack that has a loop on the top, I highly recommend attaching a Heroclip to the top. You don’t really need it in a situation like this where there is already a hook:
But a Heroclip is extremely handy with this sling when you’re in a café or out and about in other places where there’s no other easy way to hang the bag.
When not in use as a hook, the Heroclip is just a simple carabiner hanging off your bag.
